Why Are Engagement Rings Bigger Than Wedding Bands?

Why Are Engagement Rings Bigger Than Wedding Bands?

There are many different traditions when it comes to weddings. One of the longest and most popular traditions is the gifting of a ring. Throughout history, proposing with a ring and the subsequent wearing of the said ring has signified not only wealth and prosperity, but love and devotion. It is important that when choosing either an engagement ring or a wedding band, you know not only the differences between the two, but the potential causes for the differences.

What Is An Engagement Ring?

An engagement ring is traditionally worn by the woman (or whoever receives the proposal). The band can be either gold or silver, and usually has a gemstone in the center.

What Is A Wedding Band?

Referencing the same With Clarity article, wedding bands are typically given by both parties during the wedding ceremony. These bands tend not to have a gemstone and are plain in nature. Whoever received the engagement ring can either choose to wear both that and the wedding band, or simply just the wedding band.

Are Engagement Rings Bigger?

Although the size of both a wedding band/ring and an engagement ring should be the same, sometimes an engagement ring can appear to be the bigger of the two.  Perhaps this is because of the more lavish nature of an engagement ring. As previously stated, engagement rings tend to have one or multiple gemstones. This could lead to the engagement ring looking bigger, as the gemstone(s) could be bigger than the band itself.

Overall, engagement rings and wedding bands not only have differences in their history, but their physical appearances as well. Throughout the years, engagement rings were made to show the luxurious and wealthy lifestyle of the couple, so the ring is typically adorned with larger gemstones and intricate designs around the band. It is not unusual that this ring will appear bigger, as the wedding band is usually modest and unassuming.
